ADOPTION: It's About LOVE

This topic has such a special place in our hearts. I’ve been wanting to post an entry regarding ADOPTION, along with a tribute to Brody’s birth parents for a long time, but I hesitated because this topic is so near, and dear to us, I didn’t quite know how to give it justice, while at the same time preserving our birth parent’s privacy. However, I now have the perfect opportunity to post about it. . .

Several weeks ago we had a photographer friend (who we met through FSA (families supporting adoption) classes and has adopted 2 children of her own) take some pictures of us, and Brody’s birth parents. We wanted to capture the “adoption placement,” and the LOVE that was felt by all, for this baby boy (sadly, we didn’t get any pictures at the hospital on the actual day of placement, as unfortunately it felt sort of rushed, but we wanted to preserve the moment in some way). I’ll remember that day as very “bitter- sweet.”  I know that sounds cliché. . . It was the happiest day of our lives, but we also felt the pain, and agony our birth parents (and their families) were going through at the same time.

It is very important to us that Brody always knows, and understands that his adoption was done out of PURE love for him. Through these pictures, we hope he’ll be able to SEE this. The world has many misconceptions about adoption, and often portrays the negative, or sad views of adoption. We don’t ever want Brody to be confused by this, or feel that he was “given up.” They didn’t give Brody up, they gave him more. Brody’s birth parents had an extremely agonizing decision to make, and we are eternally grateful that they had the COURAGE to do what they knew was right, and what was very best for him. They made a purely UNSELFISH decision, and followed their hearts, and lovingly placed him in our arms. Now that, is a example of pure LOVE. For us, we received the ultimate gift.-- a child! Next to the atonement, I can’t think of a greater gift than that. Can you!? They knew that Brody was sent here on earth to be in our family. I sometimes wonder if an agreement was made between the four of us long ago, in heaven. There were so many miracles, and things that took place to make this adoption happen- - I have no doubt that our Heavenly Father guided our birth parents, and guided our little boy to us. And I also believe Brody directed our birth parents to choosing us. The Lord definitely places people in our lives at the right times, in the right situations.

We are FOREVER grateful to Brody’s birth parents, and have an enormous amount of love for them. They will always have a special place in our hearts. Brody is such a lucky boy to be soooo loved by so many. Thank you for giving us the gift we could not give each other.
We know Brody is our son. That he was meant to be in our FOREVER family-- he just had to get to us a different way.

Brody’s adoption story (in a nutshell):

There’s so MUCH more to the story than this, but I’m keeping it short, and sweet for the time being.
Brody’s birth parents were getting ready to start their senior year of high school when the found out they were pregnant. They began to consider adoption as an option. Brody’s birth mom, Kourtney, began looking at adoptive couples profile’s on "ItsAboutLove.org" (LDS Family Service's adoption website). Our profile stood out to her. The opening picture on our adoption profile was the one of Brent, and I on our horses smooching (the one that’s on the top right corner of this blog). When she saw it, she had a “warm feeling,” and she decided to read our profile. Kourtney began communicating with us by email in September 2009. We talked this way for a couple of months, and then in early November, she made her decision. She had chosen us to be the parents of her baby!! We met in person with Kourtney and Jordan, (Brody’s birth father), in December, and we immediately hit it off! We felt like we had known them before, and things progressed from our first meeting. We met a few other times, and Kourtney was thoughtful enough to give us an album of Brody’s ultrasounds. I can’t describe how much that meant. We got to know one another through the months that followed, and developed a sweet friendship. We have an open adoption, and we are grateful for this. Brody will never have to wonder, or have the mystery of all the “why’s,” and “who’s” haunting him throughout his life.

Well, I haven’t even tipped the iceberg with our adoption story. . . I’ll save the rest for some other time.

Here some of the pictures that we had taken. I hope you can somewhat feel the love that was felt by all of us for this little boy, when he was placed in our arms on that magical March day.

Brody's birth mom, and I have matching necklaces which have"two hearts" on them.  They represent our hearts, two mother's love for this sweet baby boy.  We gave the necklace to her on the day of placement which seemed like such a small, insignificant gift compared to the gift we were being given.   But, I love what it represents.  Since then, we have added Brody's birth stone which hangs between the two hearts.
Our "angel" who delivered Brody to us.

"If our prayers had been answered the way that we wanted them to, you wouldn't be in our arms."
I love this quote.  During the past ten years we have been through so many struggles to start our family, as we have traveled down the painful road of infertility, and throughout the adoption process.  The fall before Brody's adoption, we had experienced our second failed IVF (in-vitro fertilization).  We were devastated, and heart broken to say the very least.  We were shocked, and weary, from the unending grief we were experiencing. (Click here to see an article on what couples experiencing infertility go through.)  We wanted so badly for it to work, and we couldn't understand WHY.  We had also endured an adoption scam, and several failed adoptions.  Why did we have to endure this trial, and why did Heavenly Father think we were strong enough for it?  Why wasn't anything working out for us?  After all, it was a righteous desire, and we were doing everything in our power to have children.  Why weren't we being blessed?  We were literally to the point where we didn't have anything more to give of ourselves, and felt like giving up.  All we could do is trust in our Heavenly Father.  And we did.  He had a plan for us, and he blessed us according to His plan, and His timing.  There was a special baby boy who was waiting to join our family, and we had to wait for him.  If things had worked out for us with IVF, or the other adoptions, we wouldn't have him in our lives.  We can't imagine life without him.

"The Lord compensates the faithful for every loss. That which is taken away from those who love the Lord will be added unto them in His own way. While it may not come at the time we desire, the faithful will know that every tear today will eventually be returned a hundredfold with tears of rejoicing and gratitude."
-Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin "Come What May, and Love It."
(Click here to view full article)
We shed MANY, MANY tears throughout this process, and it is true, every tear WAS returned a hundredfold with tears of rejoicing and gratitude.
Just look at that sweet face.
Ten tiny toes.
I love this one.  Bless you!!  The photographer had perfect timing to catch Brody's sneeze!
WE LOVE ADOPTION.  We especially love the baby boy it has brought into our lives.

Mother's Day Weekend

I'd have to say this has been the BEST Mother's Day ever!!!  I finally get to experience the day to the fullest with the rest of the moms out there!  I absolutely love being a Mom . . .  Brody's mom.  I wouldn't change a thing, and I'm SOOO thankful for Brody.  He has been the biggest blessing in our lives.
Also, thank you to my mom for being such a good example, and such a wonderful mother.  I love you very much.
My goodness, how he's changed in a little less than 2 months.  Here's Brody at 1 day old-- I still marvel at how alert he was as a newborn!  What a cutie.
\
Now, he's sporting the old man hair line (bald on top, with hair on the back and sides), which I think he wears well!!  About a week ago, Brody started smiling.  His little smile melts my heart.
This Mother's Day weekend we went to Pocatello to see my mom, and also to celebrate my brother, Steve's, graduation.  He graduated with a Geology degree, and is now headed off to North Dakota for a job.  Congratulations Steve!  We'll miss you, and we love you.

Newborn Photo Shoot

I mentioned earlier that a local photographer was coming to our house to do some newborn pictures.  Here are a FEW of our favorites.  It was so much fun, and we LOVE how they turned out.  Thanks Amy, you did an awesome job, and we will treasure these pictures for a lifetime!  They are priceless!!

Our little buckaroo.
Sweet smile.

Sleepy baby.
The cutest center piece ever!
I love his expression here.

Our first family photo.

"Brody Bear".  The hat is very fitting-- we call him this because he has little fuzzy ears like a bear cub.

Sweet Angel

Our angel napping peacefully on daddy's chest.  (I'm pretty sure Brent was napping too!)  They looked so cozy, and comfy snuggled up together.
We can't kiss him enough!
I'm so blessed to get to be Brody's mom.

Visits From Our Families

Suzanne's parents, who live in Arizona for the winter, left the morning after Brody was born to come home to Idaho to meet their new grandson.  They stayed the week, and helped us get settled in with our new bundle of joy.  It is great to have them home again, and we loved having them here.

Brent's family came over for a visit also (Dad, Diane, Jared, and Janelle).  They live about an hour away, so we're very lucky to have them so close.
Pictured with Brody is Brent's step-mom, Diane, and Brent's sister, Janelle.

My sister, Melanie, and her family have been over to visit several times.  We only live 20 miles apart, which I love, and we get to spend lots of time with them.  My brother, Steve, also came to meet Brody and stayed the night.  We love each and every one of our family members.  Thanks for the visits!

Brody's First Easter

Looking dashing in his new Easter outfit.  All dressed up an no place to go.
I am always looking for reasons to take a family photo.  Brent is a pretty good sport, even though he rolls his eyes at the suggestion.  We had to capture our first Easter together!
We spent the Easter holiday with my sister and her family.  They came over for dinner (pork roast, potato casserole, salad, and rolls).  We gorged ourselves, and then were entertained by the triplets the rest of the night.
The "Weirlets."  (Short for the Weir triplets!)
After we let dinner settle, we made root beer floats which was a first for the triplets.  Lauren really liked hers, but the other two weren't so sure.
Melanie and Jason.
Of course Brody was a big hit, the center of the attention.  Lauren took a turn holding him, and was very amused by the squeaks, groans, and grunts he makes.  She kept smiling, and giggling at him.
Landon also took a turn, and loved holding his cousin.  He kept asking to hold him again, and again.  However, Nathan wanted no part of it.  He has a fear of babies that none of us can figure out where it came from.  By the end of the night he had warmed up a little, and would at least be in the same room as Brody.
It was a great first Easter with our Brody.  We love you baby!
Today he weighs 8 lbs. 8 oz.  So, at 18 days old he has already gained 1 lb. 2 oz.  He's already growing like a weed!  I want him to stay a tiny, snuggly baby a little bit longer.

Loving Every Minute

We've had Brody home now for 10 days, and we've been soaking up every minute.  This parenthood thing is amazing.  We are so blessed to have this little guy in our lives.
Such a handsome little man!  He's also been a very content, easy baby so far.  Tomorrow, a friend is coming over to do a photo shoot so we can capture the newborn phase.  Can't wait!!

Brody Max Jones

Meet our son

Brody Max Jones

Born March 18, 2010
7 lbs 6 oz
19 inches

Brody joined our family on March 19th through the wonderful gift of adoption.   We are so thrilled, and feel extremely blessed to have him in our lives and in our home.  This is something we have been waiting for, and dreaming of for a very long time, and he's finally here!
We were able to be at the hospital for Brody's delivery, and get to know him from his first hours of life.  We have so much gratitude, and love for his amazing birth parents who loved him enough to make the selfless decision to give him more, by placing him for adoption.  We will be eternally grateful to them for giving us the ultimate gift.
Our new little family.
He's absolutely perfect, and we're head over heels in love with him.
It has been a long, difficult road, and we've been through countless trials to get to this point.  Although our trials will never be forgotten, as they have made an impression on our hearts, we can now say it has been worth it all.

Celebrating 10 YEARS

This week we celebrated our 10th Anniversary!!  Wow, it's hard to believe that magical day was 10 years ago.  How time flies.  It was fun to reflect back on that day together, and reminisce through the years.  It has been an amazing 10 years.
We didn't celebrate the BIG 10 with a dream Hawaiian vacation (for now), or a diamond anniversary band, (or a new roping saddle --per Brent).  We're holding out for something much better.  MUCH, MUCH better. . .
Coming in a few weeks?!
STAY TUNED . . .

Instead we celebrated by taking a short, overnight trip to SLC for a UTAH JAZZ vs. Los Angeles Clippers game (the Jazz won).  We met up with Brent's brother and his wife for dinner, (Rodizio Brazillian Grill - yum!) and the game.
This was the first pro game we had seen live, and although Brent probably won't admit it, I think he's an addict now! When I first suggested going he said, "Why would we go to the game when we can watch it on TV?"  Such a logical thinker, but come on, it's much more fun to see it live!  Brent is most definitely a country boy, and will avoid "the city" when at all possible.

Thanks for the fun weekend, my Love!

Be My VALENTINE!

Ooohhhh, these smell good! Brent was super thoughtful, and sent roses to me at work. Such a nice surprise. Thanks honey, and Happy Valentine's Day!  I love you very much!!

Last night, we went to a steak house for a candle light dinner with some friends. Steak and king crab really hit the spot. It was a great way to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Christmastime!!!

A yearly tradition. . . Each year since we’ve been married, we have had our picture taken by the Christmas tree (this was our 9th!) It’s fun to look back and see how we’ve changed (or aged-- yikes). With each year that passes, it only gets better!

This Christmas we spent a few days at Suzanne's parent's house. It was great to have the whole family together. For us, Christmas is all about family. It just wouldn't be the same without them. We love Christmas, and what it means. Most importantly, we celebrate the birth of our Savior. Then we mix in a whole lot of fun with family, yummy food, gifts, service, laughter, and togetherness! The Sunday after Christmas, we all went to church, and then came home to snap a quick family picture.

My sister, brother, and I. Much love to them!
